A toddler who thinks he’s mastered the art of winking has delighted the internet, and nobody has the heart to tell him that’s not really how it’s done.
Megan Gray filmed the moment her 2-year-old son, Sebastian, tried to copy his dad by giving a simple wink, but the toddler couldn’t close just the one eye, and ended up winking with both eyes closed instead. That didn’t stop his efforts though, as he shut his eyes and turned his head in slow-motion, as if providing the most casual and sophisticated of winks.
Gray, from Scotland in the U.K., couldn’t stop laughing at her son’s valiant attempt, as she told Newsweek that he “really did think he had mastered it.”
She couldn’t resist sharing the moment on her TikTok account (@meganhelengrayx), and her social media followers can’t get enough. Since the video was posted on February 17, it has already been viewed more than 1.6 million times and gained over 181,200 likes. Alongside the clip, she joked that “he thinks he’s leaned a new trick,” but no one is going to correct him.
“We were having breakfast and Sebastian’s dad winked at him, and he was just trying to copy him. We couldn’t stop laughing and saying well done, and he still winks at everyone like this,” Gray said.

There is no set age at which people learn how to wink. Indeed, some may never learn the skill, even into adulthood. But for many years, researchers have estimated that the ability to voluntarily wink may develop between the ages of 6 and 8 years, and that children must learn how to look with one eye to engage that level of motor control and cognitive maturity.
Though Sebastian is yet to understand that he has to keep one eye open when he winks, he’s still earned many new fans on social media who lauded his two-eyed attempts.
“Everyone is saying he’s a little charmer and he’s definitely going to get all the ladies with this wink. Sebastian is a little character and loves making content, I love that I can use my platform to show how funny he is,” Gray said.
Since the video of Sebastian when he “thinks this is him winking” went viral, the post has gained more than 500 comments on TikTok at the time of writing, as one person commented: “It’s very international man of mystery – wink away little dude.”
Another person said: “He’s smooth [with] it. In his head anyway.”
While another comment reads: “My toddler does this and I couldn’t figure out why! Now I think she’s trying to wink.”
