Francis Nnodi, a student at St. Catherine of Siena Elementary School in West Dundee, is the winner of the Kane County Spelling Bee.

Nodie competed against seven other students, according to the Kane County Regional Office of Education, and now has the option of attending the Scripps National Spelling Bee Finals taking place in Maryland over Memorial Day week.

Maelie Schroeder, a student at Immanuel Lutheran School in East Dundee, finished second and Tyler Hunger, who attends Holy Angel School in Aurora, finished third.

The spelling bee was held Wednesday, March 15, at Thompson Middle School in St. Charles.

Dustin Covarrubias, principal of Willard Elementary School in South Elgin, is the recipient of a Meritorious Service Award from the Illinois State Board of Education’s Those Who Excel program.

The award recognizes school personnel and volunteers who have made lasting impacts on their school communities, according to a School District U-46 news release. Award recipients will be honored at an April 29 banquet.

Covarrubias has worked for U-46 for 16 years. Prior to being named principal at Willard in 2018, he was assistant principal at Huff Elementary School in Elgin. He also has coached football, boys and girls basketball, baseball, track and field, and girls and boys volleyball during his time with U-46.

The 12th Annual Community Job Fair will be held Wednesday, March 29, at the Hanover Township Senior Center, 240 S. Route 59, Bartlett.

Veterans can meet with prospective employers from 11 to 11:30 a.m. before the doors open to the public from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is cosponsored by Hanover Township, state Rep. Fred Crespo, D-Hoffman Estates, and Cook County Board Commissioner Kevin B. Morrison, D-Schaumburg

Job seekers are asked to bring copies of their resumes, a news release said. More than 70 employers will be in attendance to hire for jobs in several fields, including health care, manufacturing, sales, administration and transportation.

Staff from the North Suburban Cook County American Job Center will offer a noon workshop on how to access free employment-seeking resources.

Food for Greater Elgin is taking name suggestions for the 26-foot box truck it will be receiving at the end of March, with the winner being announced Tuesday, April 18, at the organization’s annual Pallet to Palate fundraiser.

A limited seating, four-course meal with wine pairings will be hosted by Elgin Public House at a cost of $250 per couple.

Take-home food boxes with cooking instructions can be ordered for $125, with pickup on Friday, April 14, from Café Roma, 2175 Point Blvd., or Elgin Public House, 219 E. Chicago St.

Elevating Equity, a Grand Victoria Foundation grant program, has awarded $50,000 in grants to 12 Elgin-based recipients and organizations.

Individual grants will go to Skylar Moore from Pink Slip Zine; Ivette Sanchez from Deportivo Veracruz soccer team; Rachael Caise from Spirit Street Day Camp; Kayla Bates from the Elgin Pride Parade and Festival; Adriana Carpio from Mujeres Latinas en el Arte Bienestar; Eagon Siahaan from Accessible Studio Space for Artists; Hallie Morrison from Indigenous Wisdom Incubator; Edwin Martinez from Refurbished Computers and Accessible Tech; Diane Martinez from Diane Amar Productions and Vilma E Sanchez from Esto.

Organizations receiving grants are Ballet Folklorico Girasol and Elgin Community Bikes.
