The Indian Press Council, “concerned” by the alleged murder of Mukesh Chandrakar, requested, Saturday evening January 4, in a press release, a detailed report on the case. Independent journalist Mukesh Chandrakar, 28, had produced numerous reports on corruption and the Maoist insurgency that has raged for half a century in the state of Chhattisgarh, in central India. He also ran a popular YouTube channel called Bastar Junction. The journalist’s body was found on January 3 in the state of Chhattisgarh, by tracing his cell phone, after a report of his disappearance made by his family. Three people were arrested in connection with this case. Vishnu Deo Sai, the chief minister of Chhattisgarh and a member of India’s ruling party, called Mr Chandrakar’s death “tragic” and promised the “severest punishment” for those responsible. Last year, India ranked 159th out of 180 in the world press freedom index compiled by Reporters Without Borders.
