Islamic State Claims Responsibility for Knife Attack in Solingen, Germany

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for a knife attack in Solingen, Germany, which resulted in the death of three individuals and left eight others wounded. The attacker, according to the group’s Amaq news site, targeted Christians and identified themselves as a “soldier of the Islamic State.” The motive behind the attack is still under investigation, but authorities have not ruled out the possibility of terrorism.

Police have initiated raids on a home for asylum seekers in Solingen, with special forces involved in the operation. While a 15-year-old boy has been arrested, he is not believed to be the attacker but is suspected of having knowledge about the planned attack and failing to inform authorities.

The victims of the attack were two men aged 67 and 56, as well as a 56-year-old woman. The assailant specifically targeted their throats. Police are conducting extensive searches and investigations throughout the state of North Rhine Westphalia, but the perpetrator remains unidentified.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant, and an online portal has been established for witnesses to provide any relevant information or footage related to the attack. Churches in Solingen have opened their doors to offer support and prayer for those affected.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, along with other government officials, visited Solingen to express their support for the city and its residents. Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized the need to swiftly apprehend the perpetrator and ensure they face the full force of the law.

The attack took place during the “Festival of Diversity,” which was organized to celebrate Solingen’s 650th anniversary. The festival was canceled following the incident. Solingen, with a population of approximately 160,000, is located near Cologne and Duesseldorf.

Concerns about knife violence in Germany have prompted discussions about tightening weapons laws. Faeser recently proposed limiting the public carrying of knives to those with a blade length of up to 6 centimeters (2.4 inches), as opposed to the current allowance of 12 centimeters (4.7 inches).
