Liverpool vs Sevilla: Preview, predictions and lineups

Having enjoyed a productive tour of the United States, Liverpool are in action at Anfield for the first time this summer as they face Sevilla on Sunday afternoon.

The start of the new Premier League season beckons, with the Reds preparing for their away trip to the newly-promoted Ipswich Town on 17 August. While the club are yet to make a move in the transfer window – although that could soon change – Arne Slot has overseen a bright pre-season which saw Liverpool win all three games across the pond.

Their tour concluded with victories over domestic rivals Arsenal and Manchester United.

An alternate challenge faces them in the form of a Sevilla side also under new management. Garcia Pimienta worked wonders with Las Palmas but a dire end to the season meant a parting of ways was understandable. Pimienta is the fifth manager to take the job since Julen Lopetegui left his post in October 2022.

Sevilla desperately require stability and an improvement on their 14th-place finish in La Liga last season.

Here is 90min’s guide to Liverpool’s pre-season friendly against Sevilla.

Liverpool’s heavy hitters will be back in action on Sunday. The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Alisson were absent from the club’s tour of the US but are available for the final pre-season outing of the summer.

Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai are carrying little niggles but the midfield pair will play at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah enjoyed a productive tour and will keep his place down the right, while Fabio Carvalho is also likely to start as a drifter off the left flank.

The visitors could call upon a couple of new signings in Kelechi Iheanacho and Lucien Agoume on Sunday, but Albert Sambi Lokonga, who’s joined the club on loan from Arsenal, is believed to be dealing with a hamstring issue and won’t play.

Loic Bade is away with the French team at the Olympics.

Pimienta could name a similar team from Sevilla’s recent win over Fulham, with the likes of Saul Niguez, Tanguy Nianzou and Lucas Ocampos all starting.

Sevilla predicted lineup vs Liverpool (4-3-3):Nyland; Angel, Nianzou, Gudelj, Pedrosa; Sow, Bueno, Sow; Ocampos, Ejuke, Isaac.

While the visitors could be bolstered by fresh faces on Sunday, Liverpool head into this bout brimming with confidence thanks to their exploits overseas. Slot will now welcome a number of the club’s most prized assets back into the fold a week before the Premier League season gets underway.

Liverpool offered plenty of variation on tour. They showed their ability to control games via periods of sustained possession, but against Arsenal, in particular, the Reds were proficient in transition. While Pimienta typically condenses the pitch with a high defensive line, the hosts should control proceedings and cruise to a measured victory.

Prediction: Liverpool 2-0 Sevilla
