The stabbing attack occurred outside JR Nagano Station, leaving one dead and two injured, Kyodo and Jiji news agencies reported on Wednesday (January 22). Police are searching for the attacker who fled. The three victims were waiting at a bus stop and were apparently targeted at random, Kyodo reported, citing an investigative source. The deceased man was aged 49, while another victim, aged around 30, was seriously injured. The third injured person is a woman in her thirties. Nagano, capital of the prefecture of the same name, is some 225 km west of Tokyo in central Japan and is a popular Japanese destination for winter sports, having hosted the Winter Olympics in 1998.
