If you’re finding today’s Wordle puzzle difficult but don’t want to give up, you have come to the right place.
Here, Newsweek has compiled a few hints and tips to get you over the finishing line. But be careful if you want to solve the puzzle yourself—the answer is at the end.
The viral game, invented by New York-based software engineer Josh Wardle, is simple to follow. Players must guess one five-letter word per day and have six attempts to guess it. If a correct letter is in the right place, the tile will go green. If it is in the wrong place, it turns yellow. If it is not in the word at all, the tile goes gray.
Wardle explained why he chose to use five-letter words for Wordle, as opposed to other word lengths, in an interview with Newsweek in January 2022.
“There is a reason that every word is five letters long and that you are allowed six attempts to guess it,” he said. “That might seem arbitrary but, with the prototype version, I tested different word lengths and experimented with the number of tries that players were allowed.
“Through that process of refinement, I figured out that five letters and six tries was the ideal sweet spot. It’s just limited enough to feel challenging and to make you think, but most of the time, people still manage to solve it. So, you feel a real sense of real accomplishment.”

Wardle perfected the brainteaser during the COVID-19 lockdowns and it was then released to the public in October 2021. Wordle exploded from 90 users on November 1 that year to 300,000 on January 2, 2022, prompting The New York Times to purchase Wardle’s creation for an undisclosed seven-figure fee.
A new word appears at midnight in players’ respective time zones, but if one game a day is not enough for you, The New York Times now allows subscribers access to more than 1,000 past puzzles from the official Wordle archive on the web and in the NYT Games app.
“We are thrilled to unlock the official Wordle archive for our subscribers,” Jonathan Knight, head of games at The New York Times, said in May. “This expansion is not just about playing past puzzles; it’s about deepening the connection our community has with Wordle and with each other.”
