College football bowl games are upon us as the 2022 postseason begins with a flurry of matchups that will mark a celebration of a compelling year in the sport. The action kicked off on Friday, Dec. 16 and will run all the way through the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday, Jan. 9 as we crown a national title winner for the 2022 season.
The Bowl Season action really ramped up on Saturday with a six-game slate after the postseason began with a two-game schedule on Friday. Saturday’s action had a little bit of everything, from Oregon State securing the third 10-win season in program history in dominant fashion over an SEC opponent to a record-breaking performance from the son of an NFL legend who continues to make his own mark on the game. There was also the Celebration Bowl in which Jackson State’s bid for a perfect season was spoiled in Deion Sanders’ final game before he heads off to take over the Colorado program.
Sunday is an off-day for the bowls with the NFL taking center stage, but the postseason returns on Monday with Marshall taking on UConn in the Potato Bowl.

Frisco Bowl: Boise State 35, North Texas 32Boise State overcame a sluggish start and a halftime deficit to beat North Texas in the Frisco Bowl. What had been a stagnant game in the first half that saw both teams combine for only 16 points and 328 yards of offense came to life in the second half.
The third quarter alone featured 36 points and 381 yards of offense as both teams came out of the locker room with offensive adjustments for which neither defense could account. The Broncos leaned heavily on the run game with quarterback Taylen Green and freshman running back Ashton Jeanty. George Halani, the team’s leading rusher, started the game but came in with an ankle injury. It was clear early on that he wasn’t fully healthy.
Jeanty happily stepped in and took the reins, rushing for 178 yards and a touchdown, which paired nicely with Green’s 119 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Austin Aune threw for 238 yards, but his two interceptions doomed the Mean Green. Running back Ikaika Ragsdale did everything in his power to carry the Green offense, rushing for 94 yards and catching four passes with two total touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough.
Boise State finishes the season 10-4, giving the Broncos their first 10-win season since they went 12-2 in 2019.

New Mexico Bowl: BYU 24, SMU 23SMU quarterback Tanner Mordecai was stopped at the 1-yard line by Jakob Robinson on a quarterback draw on a 2-point conversion to give BYU a one-point win in what was a wild New Mexico Bowl on Saturday night. That came after Mordecai led a furious 14-play, 88-yard drive that culminated with a 12-yard strike from Mordecai to a leaping Jordan Kerley in the back of the end zone to get the Mustangs within one.
BYU quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava-Peters, a freshman from Hau’ula, Hawai’i, got the first start of his career in place of Jaren Hall, and he made it count. He rushed for 96 yards, threw for 47 yards and led the Cougars to the win. Senior Christopher Brooks punched it in from 22-yards out late in the third quarter to give the Cougars a 24-10 lead, which ended up being the difference for Kalani Sitake’s crew.

LendingTree Bowl: Southern Miss 38, Rice 24Southern Miss running back Frank Gore Jr. set an NCAA FBS bowl game record with 329 yards rushing while leading the Golden Eagles to a 38-24 win over Rice in the LendingTree Bowl. Gore’s performance marked the highest single-game rushing output for a Football Bowl Subdivision player this season and set a school record.
Gore needed just 21 carries to achieve the mark as he averaged 15.7 yards per pop while scoring twice on the ground. The dynamic junior also completed 2 of 3 passes for 19 yards and a touchdown while operating at quarterback in a speciality package that has become a hallmark for the program with Gore in the backfield.
The son of longtime NFL running back Frank Gore had already etched his name in Southern Miss lore by surpassing 1,000 yards on the ground during the regular season and helping the Golden Eagles return to their first bowl game since 2019. But Saturday’s performance marked a legendary effort that will take his fame to new heights.
Gore’s first major highlight came at the 10:14 mark of the second quarter when he put Southern Miss ahead 14-0 on a 64-yard touchdown run. Late in the fourth quarter with the Golden Eagles clinging to a 31-24 lead, Gore broke off another huge run, going 55 yards to the house with 2:57 left to seal the outcome. In between there were runs of 25 and 59 yards as well as an 18-yard touchdown toss in the third quarter.

LA Bowl: Fresno State 29, Washington State 6Jake Haener’s college career ended the only way it could’ve: with the Fresno State QB banged up and balling out as the Bulldogs cruised to victory. Haener threw for 277 yards and two touchdowns while playing on the same ankle that was supposed to knock him out for the entire season. He had plenty of help, though.
The real star of the show for the Fresno State offense was the ground game, where Jordan Mims rushed for 205 yards and two touchdowns on only 18 carries. Mims out-gained the Washington State offense on its own as the Cougars were held to 182 yards of offense. Cam Ward completed 22 of his 32 pass attempts but only threw for 137 yards with an interception, and he was sacked six times.
Ward also found himself on the wrong end of a highlight, when he Orlovsky’d himself by stepping out of the back of the end zone while scrambling.
Fresno State finishes the season 10-4. It’s the Bulldogs second consecutive 10-win season, and their fourth in the last six seasons.

Las Vegas Bowl: No. 14 Oregon State 30, Florida 3
Oregon State can celebrate a peak in the program’s history. With a 30-3 Las Vegas Bowl win against Florida, the Beavers finish with 10 wins in a season for the third time and all but secured the program’s first top-25 finish since 2012.
Beavers coach Jonathan Smith first snapped an eight-year bowl drought in 2021, and now he’s delivered an honor that he first reached as the Beavers’ quarterback back in 2000 when he led the team to the program’s first-ever 10-win season. This victory comes as a total team effort, with Oregon State playing two quarterbacks, utilizing all-purpose star Jack Colletto in all three phases and making Florida pay for its mistakes in what was nearly a historic shutout.
Florida’s field goal with 37 seconds remaining preserved the program’s FBS-leading streak of consecutive games with a score. Those three points make it 436 games for Florida without a shutout, a streak that dates back to 1988. TCU, which has a 380-game streak that dates back to 1991, nearly moved into first place for the FBS active scoring streak, but Billy Napier’s decision to kick the late field goal provides a little less disappointment in what was already an extremely frustrating day for the Florida offense.
Florida’s offense already had lowered expectations considering the absence of starting quarterback Anthony Richardson, starting tackle O’Cyrus Torrence and starting wide receiver Justin Shorter. Those opt-outs, plus some transfer portal departures, contributed to Florida being a double-digit underdog to Oregon State in the game. Still, the idea that the Gators would be limited to just three points was not a popular prognostication. It’s a credit to Oregon State’s defense, which applied relentless pressure on backup quarterback Jack Miller and came up big on third- and fourth-down stops when the Gators did get into scoring position. Florida finished the game 5 of 14 on third down and 0 of 2 on fourth down, routinely facing challenging down-and-distance situations thanks to Oregon State winning battles in the trenches.
Of course, there is also the credit that needs to be given to Oregon State’s offense for putting Florida in the chase position all afternoon. The Beavers also nearly doubled up Florida in first downs (24 to 13) and outgained the Gators 353-219 in the win.
For Florida the offseason brings plenty of intrigue for how the program will bounce back from its second straight losing season, while Oregon State seems as healthy as its been in a long time after a historic showing here in 2022.

Travis Hunter, the former No. 1 overall recruit from the 2022 class, made a spectacular catch with no time remaining in regulation to help send the game to overtime. However, the Tigers could not convert on its first offensive possession in overtime and comes up just short to finish the season 12-1.

Fenway Bowl: Louisville 24, Cincinnati 7While there weren’t any bases on the field at Fenway Park, that didn’t stop Louisville from running all over Cincinnati. After a slow start befitting a bowl game played on a cold, windy morning between two teams with interim coaches, the Cardinals jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a 49-yard touchdown run from Jawhar Jordan late in the first quarter and never looked back.
Those 49 yards were only some of the 286 yards the Cardinals picked up on the ground, with Jordan finishing with 115 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries. And he wasn’t even the team’s leading rusher! That was Maurice Turner, who took on the workhorse role, carrying the ball 31 times for 160 yards.
Louisville’s defense was spectacular as well, holding Cincinnati to only 138 yards of offense, which helped the Cardinals overcome four turnovers in the game. The Cardinals finished with 10 tackles for loss and seven sacks, giving Cincinnati QB Evan Prater problems with pressure all day. Prater completed only seven of his 15 passes for 83 yards, and even his touchdown pass came while he was being dragged to the ground.
The Cardinals finish the season with a record of 8-5, while the Bearcats finish 9-4, missing out on the chance to finish with 10 wins for the fourth time in five seasons.

Cure Bowl: No. 24 Troy 18, No. 25 UTSA 12The only bowl matchup between conference champions was one of the most highly anticipated Group of Five bowls of the season, and Troy got the job done with one of its best defensive performances of the year. It forced an incompletion from Frank Harris to Zakhari Franklin deep over the middle at the 10-yard line with 1:32 left in the game to force a turnover on downs for the second straight possession. Harris also missed Franklin on fourth-and-goal with 7:01 remaining on its best scoring chance of the second half.
The Roadrunners jumped out to a 12-0 lead midway through the second quarter but had four turnovers on the next four drives (excluding a kneel down at the half).
The Trojans struggled to capitalize on those turnovers. It did, however, cash KJ Robertson’s interception at the goal line in for a touchdown when RaJae’ Johnson caught a 12-yard strike from Gunnar Watson to give them a 15-12 lead late in the third quarter.
It is the 11th straight win for the Trojans — the third-longest winning streak in the nation behind Georgia and Michigan. They finish the season 12-2, which is their first 12-win season since moving to the FBS prior to the 2001 season. Not a bad debut for Jon Sumrall’s first season as a head coach at any level.

Bahamas Bowl: UAB 24, Miami (OH) 20UAB just needed its defense to make a stop with the goal line on their back as Miami (OH) wide receiver Jalen Walker was on his way to the end zone eyeing a last-second, game-winning touchdown. The Blazers wrapped up Walker and brought him to the ground at the 2-yard line, sealing a 24-20 win in an epic edition of the Bahamas Bowl.
It was a win for UAB that came with mixed emotions as interim coach Bryant Vincent, who took over the team following Bill Clark’s retirement in July, went out a winner in his last game leading the team. Meanwhile, over on the sideline, there was Trent Dilfer, UAB’s next head coach, taking in the performance and rooting on the team that he will inherit as the program turns the page from 2022 to 2023.
UAB was also without its star running back, DeWayne McBride, after the NCAA’s leading rusher and Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year announced shortly before the game that he would not be playing. Early on there was no sign that McBride’s absence would play a role in the eventual outcome, as backup running back Jermaine Brown was more than capable of being productive with a heavier workload and the Blazers jumped out to a 10-0 lead. But Miami put together an impressive touchdown drive right before halftime to cut that lead 10-6 and give the RedHawks some momentum heading into the locker room. It was the first of two touchdown passes from Miami quarterback Aveon Smith with both scores coming on impressive catches.
UAB mistakes nearly handed the game away in the second half as the Blazers both fumbled a punt late in the third quarter to set up a one-play touchdown drive for Miami and then lost a fumble with six minutes left in the fourth quarter with the Blazers trailing 20-17. But the Blazers defense, like it did on the final play, stood tall and forced a field goal attempt after that fumble to give UAB’s offense one more chance for a game-tying or go-ahead score. Brown was the star of the drive and the star of the game, scoring his second touchdown of the day and rounding out a 24-carry, 116-yard performance.
Needing a TD to win, Miami’s final drive was hectic. There were 12 plays, multiple penalties and two fourth-down conversions by the RedHawks. But ultimately it was that final tackle that allowed UAB to hold on for the win, giving the Blazers a victory in the same bowl game where they first made an appearance in 2017 at the end of the program’s first season back on the field after the program was shut-down.
It is a fitting end to a great era of UAB football as the Blazers turn the page from the Bill Clark era to the Trent Dilfer era and from being in Conference USA to jumping up to the American Athletic Conference. The last five years have included multiple bowl bids, two conference championships and three conference title game appearances. Now it’s up to Dilfer and the rest of this UAB team to try and match those results in the AAC, and the best news for the Blazers comes from the fight they showed in the Bahamas Bowl and what it says about the current state of this team.

Miami will honor Mike Leach in today’s Bahamas BowlThe Miami (OH) Redhawks will honor Mike Leach with a helmet decal in today’s Bahamas Bowl, sporting a mash-up of the MAC logo and the pirate flag sporting his name and #FlyTheFlag. This will likely be one of many tributes to Leach, who passed away earlier this week at the age of 61, as college football continues to celebrate the life of one of the sport’s true pioneers.
The Bahamas Bowl kicks off at 11:30 a.m. ET from Nassau, with UAB and Miami going head-to-head in the first game of the 2022-23 bowl season.
