Cowboys vs. Steelers: Injuries & depth chart shifting add more intrigue to this Sunday night

Steelers Could Change QB Depth Chart vs. Cowboys – Noah Strackbein, Sports Illustrated
Russell Wilson could be added to the active roster for the first time this season.

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers will take on the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5 behind Justin Fields at quarterback. Coming off a historic performance on the road in Indianapolis, the black and gold is sticking with their younger option while Russell Wilson returns from a calf injury.

But the feeling this week is different from weeks past. While there is not a sense Wilson will return as the starter, and may not start for the season – barring injury – all year, he could climb up the depth chart in Week 5.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Ray Fittiapoldo believes that instead of being named inactive and only being the emergency quarterback for the Steelers, one insider believes Wilson will be active and listed as the backup behind Fields. This would be the first time Wilson is technically active for a game all season.

“That’s the feeling I’m getting right now, I think,” Fittipaldo said on 93.7 The Fan. “All along there were going to be incremental steps in this process and this is one more box to check off.”

Wilson was asked about being healthy enough to be active and the No. 2 this week, and expressed doing whatever it takes to help the team and Fields against the Cowboys.

“I think the first thing is just making sure that I’m really physically ready to go, you know, every week being ready to go in some fashion. That’s just kind of been my mentality, just making sure that if something happens to be ready, you know, and help us win, that’s always the case, to help us win,” Wilson said. “Justin’s done a great job. Our team has too, and our guys have been battling. So I feel confident.”

The Steelers have not named Fields the long-term starter for this team, but head coach Mike Tomlin did hint that there’s a possibility that happens if Fields continues to play well.

Steelers RB Jaylen Warren to miss Week 5 vs. Cowboys – Jarrett Bailey, BehindTheSteelCurtain.com

Pittsburgh struggling rush attack will be without their RB2 against Dallas.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have struggled to be efficient in the run game. The Steelers are 10th in the NFL in rushing yards per game, but average less than four yards per carry. Pittsburgh is also 25th in the league in rush success rate, and they’ll be shorthanded at running back again this week.

According to Nick Farabaugh of PennLive, Jaylen Warren will miss his second straight game. The Steelers will utilize Aaron Shampklin and Jonathan Ward as the running backs behind Najee Harris, as Cordarrelle Patterson will likely be out, as well.

Patterson had a terrific showing against the Colts, averaging over seven yards per carry before going down with an ankle injury. Harris finished with 19 yards on 13 carries. The Steelers need more out of their run game. Luckily for them, they are facing a Cowboys defense that ranks 26th in defensive rush success rate.

Steelers-Cowboys Game One of the Hottest Tickets in NFL – Chris Ward, SteelersNow.com
Two of the biggest NFL brands. Two storied histories. One premier rivalry.

The Steelers-Cowboys game on Sunday night is trending as the hottest ticket this week in the NFL and the third hottest NFL ticket this regular season, with an average ticket of $551, according to Vivid Seats. Sunday’s game is also the hottest ticket in Pennsylvania this October. The best deal is $230 for the game.

With two iconic franchises facing each other in primetime, it’s not surprising that tickets are going at a high rate. The amount of Cowboys fans projected to be at the game is pretty eye-opening, though. I know it’s America’s Team but still.

Vivid Seats projects that 46% of Acrisure Stadium will be Cowboys fans. Fans are traveling 624 miles, on average, making it the second furthest traveled game this weekend, just behind Giants-Seahawks.

Mike Tomlin reflected on the Steelers-Cowboys historic rivalry during his Tuesday press conference.

“The strength of the brands is something that is to be respected,” Tomlin said. “I respect that every day when I get out of the car in this parking lot. It’s a responsibility to represent the black and gold, and I would imagine the guys in Dallas feel the same way.

“You can’t put a price tag on standards and legacy, and both organizations have that. We walk on the ground that’s been paved for us by those that have come before us. We feel really blessed and honored to do so and I’m sure that will be reflected in the way that both teams play this weekend.”

The Cowboys lead the all-time series against the Steelers, 17-16. The two teams have met in the Super Bowl a league-high three times, with the Steelers winning two of those matchups.

Here are the final injury reports for both the Cowboys and Steelers.
