Dustin Johnson WITB for 2024 LIV Golf Team Championship Explored

Dustin Johnson is one of the best players of the last decade. Having achieved such success during his physical peak, he secured big deals with TaylorMade and Nike and they even customized their irons for him. Speaking of which, let’s see what the Aces Captain has in his bag going into the 2024 LIV Golf Team Championship.

Dustin Johnson, or DJ as he is affectionately called, is known for being a long hitter of the golf ball and has consistently collaborated with TaylorMade in designing and testing their drivers. Currently, he uses the TaylorMade Qi10 with a Fujikura Speeder 661 Evolution 2.0 X shaft and a loft of 12.5 degrees. He also carries three other woods—a 3-wood, a 7-wood, and a 9-wood. He uses the Qi10 HL for his 3-wood and the earlier released Stealth range for his 7-wood and 9-wood. All of them are equipped with LA Golf Prototype Shafts.

Johnson is also a very complete player. While he had previously struggled with his short game, after working on it, he became much more adept at finishing holes. However, he has always been a confident iron player. When TaylorMade released their P730 irons, they customized them for their staff players like DJ, Rory McIlroy, and Justin Rose. Johnson’s irons have “DJ Proto” engraved on them and are rumored to have longer clubfaces. They have the True Temper Dynamic Gold X100 shafts, and he uses them in a 4 to PW sequence.

As mentioned earlier, he has worked extensively on his short game, and although he has not always used TaylorMade wedges, he now uses their MG4 wedges in 52-degree and 60-degree models. He also sometimes uses a Hi-Toe wedge, but it goes in and out of his bag. The Milled Grind wedges are among the best available and are also aesthetically pleasing. They offer consistent spin and reliable bounce.

For putting, he uses the TaylorMade Spider V putter, which ranks as one of the best putters in golf. He has fitted it with a SuperStroke Zenergy Pistol grip on the reliable flatstick. The putter is known for delivering excellent energy transmission even when struck off-center and provides a well-balanced feel.

In the past, Dustin Johnson has spoken about how he has had to work to get the most out of his game by improving on his short game. He has said, “About three seasons ago, I realized I needed to take my wedge-game practice a lot more seriously. My short game has made me a complete player.”

He has also focused on distance control. With the MG4 wedges, he mentioned that they provide a lot of good feel, which is key to his game. Another aspect he has highlighted is the reliable spin of the wedges, which he particularly likes with his 60-degree model. He will be hoping the scoring clubs bring him good numbers in the upcoming LIV Golf Team Championship finals.
