Morning Report: Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller ‘extending a helping hand’ to Nick Diaz

Jason Miller knows all about the highs and lows of combat sports.

The longtime MMA veteran has faced his share of trials and tribulations in the past few years, including numerous run-ins with the law that have resulted in jail time and hefty fines. In September 2023, “Mayhem” put out a public statement describing his life as “horrible.”

Since that time, Miller has managed to stay out of trouble and has even dipped his toes back into the MMA world with podcast appearances. Given how much his life has turned around in a year, Miller was asked in an interview with Helen Yee if he has any advice for fellow fighting lifer Nick Diaz. The elder Diaz brother was supposed to fight at UFC 310 this Saturday, but withdrew from a bout against Vicente Luque for undisclosed reasons.

Soon after, video surfaced of Diaz showing erratic behavior, which led to speculation that there is turmoil in his private life. Whatever the case may be, Miller wants Diaz to know that he’s there for him.

“Listen here, we all saw what we saw and I won’t dwell on it too bad,” Miller told Yee. “I think people in Nick’s life need to gather around. Anybody who ever made some money off him needs to come circle around and help this guy out. We had our beef, whatever, since we were kids, but that doesn’t stop me from extending a helping hand to this guy if he needs it. And if he’s not ready to take a helping hand, you all need to keep on him. The people close to him, his brother, his family, his friends, all you guys that made money off him, he needs you now. He needs a circle back.

“That’s not talking bad on him, it’s a tough sport we’re in and it’s easy to get tripped up in the wrong things. Super easy. And it’s even harder to come up out of that, so my advice is not for him, it’s for the people around him to help him get to a better place in his life.”

Miller and Diaz are more well known as rivals than friends. At a Strikeforce event in April 2010, Miller confronted rival Jake Shields following Shields’ win over Dan Henderson, leading to a post-fight brawl that involved Miller, Shields, and both Nick and Nate Diaz.

Even given their tumultuous past, Miller relates to what Diaz might be going through, especially considering his own issues.

“I wish somebody would have done it for me earlier,” Miller said of needing help. “They did and I finally took the help and now my life keeps getting better and better… I went through all this hard stuff with substances. It’s super easy to get tripped up in, it’s so easy, especially when you’re used to the bright lights and crazy, exciting—the fight is like nothing else.”

“There’s something in you that once you have this super exciting thing in your life, and if you’re not doing it all the time, then it’s easy to slip into something that gives you that feeling really quickly and I don’t think that we should judge people for that,” Miller added. “I think that we should help them up out of that when we can.”

Guys my fight will be broadcasted on ESPN, way more people will watch my fight than on the PPV, I don’t even care if I’m the first fight of the night, I get paid the same. All my life I worked hard to earn thing nothing was ever given to me

Last big fight week of the year! (I know we still have UFC Tampa next week, but you know what I mean). UFC 310 is a legitimately great card, one of the best on paper and I’m ready for us to get to it. – Meshew
