Saints C Erik McCoy scheduled for sports hernia surgery on Wednesday

New Orleans Saints C Erik McCoy will be undergoing sports hernia surgery today after going down just three snaps into Sunday’s matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles, per ESPN’s Katherine Terrell. Dr. Benton Emblom’s team is expected to perform the operation on Wednesday at Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, AL.

I’d anticipate the Saints placing McCoy on IR with a return designation, as the 27-year-old is essential to this offense’s success. Being one of the premier players at his position, it’ll be nearly impossible for New Orleans to replicate his production on the field. Known for his toughness and voice as a leader, I’m sure he wants to be back out there just as much as the fans want him to be.

Ideally, the Pro Bowler recovers quickly and can help the Saints make a playoff push, if not already clear by then.

Out of the five offensive linemen hosted yesterday, New Orleans chose not to go with the popular pick among Saints fans in former Los Angeles Rams C Brian Allen and instead signed veteran G Chris Reed to the practice squad on Wednesday morning.
