The World Triathlon Multisport Championships began this morning in Townsville, Australia, and the first world champions have now been crowned: Javier Martin Morales and Marion Legrand have won the World Championship Duathlon
In a first race of a week full of World Championships, it was Spaniard Javier Martin Morales who proved the fastest over just under five kilometers of running, 19.4 kilometers of cycling and another 2.5 kilometers of running. It was a close finish, as his final time of 52:25 kept him just one second ahead of Frenchman Benjamin Choquert, who finished second. Another five seconds later, it was the also French Thomas Laurent who finished third in 52:31.
In the women’s race, the differences were bigger and no one was equal to Marion Legrand: the Frenchwoman won in a time of 58:37, staying almost half a minute ahead of Australian Richelle Hill, who finished second in 59:06. Even after that, it was a short wait again, as Belgium’s Jeanne Dupont finished third in 1:00:13.
