After months of swirling rumors and speculation about her whereabouts and health, Kate Middleton announced on Friday that she is undergoing treatment for cancer.
In a video announcement from Kensington Palace, the Princess of Wales, 42, revealed that evidence of cancer was discovered during her abdominal surgery in January. “At the time, it was thought that my condition was noncancerous,” Middleton said in the video. “The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present.”
“This, of course, came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family,” she continued.
While she didn’t specify the type of cancer her doctors identified, Middleton disclosed that she’s currently in the early stages of a course of “preventative” chemotherapy after her major surgery, and that she and her family continue to need privacy throughout her treatment process.
“Most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte, and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them and to reassure them that I am going to be okay,” she said. The princess ended her statement by expressing well wishes to others who have experienced cancer, saying, “I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone.”
